DISCLAIMER: In My Opinion
*********************************************************************
|
I write screenplays. So I go to movies. A
lot of movies.
Some of this is for professional research -- if you write movies you've
got to watch
movies, ALL kinds of movies, the good, the bad, and the boring.
That's the best way
to learn about story and character and pacing.
So I'll go to a lot of movies that don't immediately strike my
fancy, just to see how
it's done. Everything from commercial blockbusters to indie flicks,
foreign films to documentaries.
(As a rule I avoid movies rated X, horror flicks, and Adam Sandler.
Of course there are exceptions to every rule; see below*)
Some might scoff at my Professional Research, and point out that going
to
movies is fun.
Well, that's true.
It can be fun. Because I love movies. I love to be entertained.
But not all movies are entertaining. Some dramas sink under the
weight of their own pretension; some comedies struggle to force a
laugh, some thrillers are dull.
It's not like I'm sitting there in the dark, waiting to pounce on the
movie, scribbling
picky, critical notes. High drama or low comedy, I want to be totally
absorbed.
In fact, that's when I realize that something is off -- when I notice
the movie. Anything that jerks me out of the world up on the screen.
If I'm thinking "Huh?" or "Not again" or "Is it over yet?", the movie
has failed to do its job. Sometimes it's a minor glitch, sometimes a
fatal flaw.
I'll give the movie every chance to succeed. Heck, I want it to
succeed! I have never
walked out on a movie (although I have come close** and once I
did doze off*** )
It's all a matter of personal taste, and these reviews are, of course,
entirely IMO. Enjoy!
