Fun
With Spam
Making spamwiches
out of
spam
Or, what to do with junk e-mail
My original e-mail
address has over the years become an easy target of
spam mailers,
despite installing
all manner of blocks and filters and the spaminator
and all that. Eventually
I gave up,
switching operations over to several new e-mail addresses I still
hang on to my original address, not out of nostalgia, but to use when
registration of a legitimate e-mail address is necessary. I know those
registrations trigger the spam-bots, but at least this way most of the
spam gets funneled into one place, which I ignore most of the time.
Every week or so I
go through the hundreds (and hundreds) of spam
mail messages, deleting one after another, barely glancing to see if
there is a
name I might recognize. Because there rarely is. But the other
names! Wow! This weekly chore is enlivened by the
variety of names the spam-bots create to tempt the recipient into
reading the message.
As a screenwriter
I'm always naming characters,
and I put a lot of thought into that task -- trying to find the balance
between something memorable and readable and representative of the
character, while
avoiding clichés like Detective Nick [insert-name-of-gun] or
(worse) names which have already been used.
So when I see the
list of randomly generated names created by the
spam-bots, I can't help
but be impressed.
Fresh, colorful, evocative -- what characters these
names could be!
If you're a writer,
remember: the next time you're taking out the
cyber trash, double-check -- there could be some inspiration in all
that junk.
